Because I am getting so many questions from our weight loss patients about intermittent fasting, today’s article is going to be about simplifying the whole approach to intermittent fasting. So many people coming into the office for help with weight loss are already practicing some type of intermittent fasting but they are making it very complicated. Intermittent fasting is actually very simple. The easiest form of intermittent fasting is to eat when you are hungry. You do not have to follow any type of timetable and eat 5 or 6 times a day, you just eat when your body tells you to eat. Please make sure that you discuss any type of dietary changes with your family doctor or visit us. So let’s first start with defining what intermittent fasting is. Intermittent fasting is not really a diet, it does not tell you specifically what type of foods that you should be eating. Intermittent fasting is simply periods of eating and fasting. Basically it’s a time table or pattern of eating.

When I consult with weight loss patients and they are interested in doing some type of intermittent fasting program what I usually do is have them start out with eating 3 meals a day; breakfast, lunch and dinner. In addition to breakfast, lunch and dinner people can snack on vegetables. Some of the questions I get from people about intermittent fasting is if they can take their vitamins and supplements while practicing intermittent fasting. In my personal experience taking your supplements and vitamins is fine while practicing intermittent fasting. As far as beverages go, I usually recommend that people stick to water.

With intermittent fasting there are two very important things that you need to remember. The first is that this is a fasting protocol. It is a series of short fasts followed by eating. The second important thing is that you have to be mindful of the type of food that you are eating.

So many people coming into the office now are practicing some type of intermittent fasting. But the problem is that they are eating tons of starchy carbohydrates like pizza, rice and potatoes. This totally defeats the purpose of intermittent fasting. Because it will force your body to produce a tremendous amount of insulin and this is commonly called insulin spikes.

The purpose of intermittent fasting is to limit the number of insulin spikes our body experiences during the day. Please remember that even though you have reduced the number of times you are eating during the day you still cannot eat whatever you want. Personally, my meals are usually made up of a large amount of vegetables, a modest amount of protein and good healthy fats like olive oil, avocados and ghee.  

I do not consider my personal diet a low carb diet because I eat at least 5 to 7 cups of vegetable a day. And vegetables can be considered a carbohydrate. Vegetables are good carbohydrates as compared to starchy carbohydrates like pizza, pasta, rice and potatoes. Our bodies require the nutrients In vegetables to maintain normal function of all the systems in our body. So regardless of any timetable or schedule that you may set for yourself; please remember that your meals have to consist of a healthy balance of vegetables, healthy protein and good healthy fats. Also please keep in mind that there are many eating timetables and protocols for intermittent fasting.  So you have to find the one that is best for you. Just because your best friend might be following a particular intermittent fasting pattern does not mean that it’s going to be good for you.

There are several different models of intermittent fasting. The most popular type is simply choosing 8 hours during the day in which you will be eating all or most of your food. There are also models in which you choose a 6 hour window and even a 4 hour window to eat most of your meals. I find that starting out with eating breakfast, lunch and dinner is the easiest and most successful model to follow when beginning intermittent fasting. After following the 3 meals a day model people usually try the 8 hour model that is so popular. 

When a person first comes to our practice and is interested in intermittent fasting we will usually have them start with eating 3 meals a day. We see how they do with that eating schedule and then we can tweak the diet as time goes on. If you are attempting to practice intermittent fasting on your own please do not be overly aggressive, start slowly. Do not go from eating five or six times a day down to just one meal a day or even worse… going days without eating. This recipe makes 2 servings

  • Solutions 4 chocolate protein powder – 2 scoops
  • Avocado – 1 ½ – 2
  • Hemp milk – 3 ounces
  • Heavy cream – 3 ounces
  • Your choice of any Nut butter – 2 tablespoons (I like organic peanut butter or almond butter)
  • Ice cubes – 10
  • Combine all of the ingredients in your blender and enjoy!

Very Berry Green Ketosis Smoothie

  • Heavy cream – 6 ounces
  • Spinach – 1 handful
  • Berries – ¼ cup
  • Solutions 4 chocolate protein powder – 1 -2 scoops
  • You can add water, 3 – 4 ounces if you like.
  • Combine all of the ingredients in your blender and enjoy!

Strawberry Cream cheese Ketosis

  • Heavy cream – 3 ounces

So many patients come into the office asking about apple cider vinegar. everyone thinks that it’s some magical elixir and there is good reason to think so; but there is quite a bit of misinformation about apple cider vinegar. So in this article I’m going to tell you some of the  major health benefits of apple cider vinegar.

People think that apple cider vinegar contains lots of vitamins like vitamin A and vitamin C and that it also contains quite a bit of minerals but it does not. But it does contain a very valuable ingredient and that is acetic acid. Acetic acid is the main reason why apple cider vinegar has been shown to help health issues such as high blood pressure, lowering blood sugar levels, helping with muscle cramps and even some types of nerve pain.

Acetic acid helps improve the pH levels of the body. Many people are under the belief that everyone has an acidic pH level and this is what causes us to retain body fat and to be sick. Most people are testing their pH levels through some type of pH dipstick test, and this is not totally accurate. To truly test your pH levels properly it has to be done through a blood test. Many of the dipsticks test show people to be in an acidic state but that’s because the various systems and organs of the body each have their own pH levels. so when you are testing your saliva with a pH dipstick and it is showing that you are acidic that does not mean that your blood pH level is acidic. Your blood, saliva and urine all have different pH levels. The most common way to determine if your pH level is acidic or alkaline is just to review the symptoms you may be experiencing.

Most people have a blood pH level that is more alkaline than it is supposed to be.

And this is why the acetic acid and apple cider vinegar is so beneficial because it brings the pH level to a more normal level.  Just a slight change in your pH level can give you huge health benefits. Improving the body’s pH levels does all sorts of wonderful things like helping the transportation vitamins and minerals and supports the various enzymes and hormonal systems of the body.

Also acetic acid has almost the same pH level as your stomach and that is why apple cider vinegar is great for heartburn, indigestion GERD and acid reflux.  Especially if you are over the age of 50 apple cider vinegar is great for stomach issues. As we grow older the stomach pH level becomes more alkaline and that is why we oftentimes need help digesting foods, especially protein. And if you are on a high protein diet you want to make sure you are taking apple cider vinegar. High amounts of protein produces a waste product called guanidine and it’s a chemical that is extremely alkaline. High amounts a guanidine can cause twitching nerve pain. Apple cider vinegar / Acetic acid vinegar helps the body process and get rid of guanidine.

Another problem with the body being too alkaline is that it decreases the ability of the body to absorb and process calcium. This leads to extra calcium being deposited into the soft tissues of the body and can even cause the development of cataracts in your eyes. It can also cause an increase in arthritis as well.

Your body can also lose potassium if it is too alkaline. so you can see that if your body is too alkaline you can suffer from several significant health issues.

Apple cider vinegar can help you lose your belly fat because it increases the body’s ability to absorb sugar / glucose into the cells and use that for energy. This helps decrease the amount of insulin that needs to be produced by the body And this in turn reduces the amount of fat that is stored around the belly. In a previous article I noted that when you see people with extra belly fat it’s usually because there is too much insulin being produced by their body. And if you help decrease the amount of insulin being produced by the body it should help get rid of the belly fat. Acetic acid in the apple cider vinegar improves your body’s ability to process and use the sugar for  fuel and this reduces the need for the body to produce extra insulin.

To summarize everything apple cider vinegar helps your body use sugar / glucose for fuel, helps improve insulin sensitivity, helps decrease your belly fat, Helps improve the ability of a body to absorb calcium and helps with arthritis and other  health issues that may develop as we grow older. it also helps with nerve pain, stomach issues such as acid reflux and GERD. And again it indirectly helps the body burn belly fat.

Personally I add one tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar to 10 ounces of water and I drink this 2 times a day.

Not only is intermittent fasting getting quite a bit of attention in the diet and fitness world but is also getting a lot of attention in the news and social media.  And many of our patients have lots of questions about intermittent fasting. Just to clear up some confusion intermittent fasting is not necessarily a diet. What intermittent fasting is is a method, a system telling you when and how often you should be eating. It doesn’t really get into the type of food that you should be eating, the number of calories you should be eating throughout the day and how much protein, vegetables and good healthy fats during the day that you should eat in a day. Again intermittent fasting is more about when you should be eating during the day and how frequently you should be eating. So the next question is why he is intermittent fasting so popular? It’s popular because when combined with the proper nutrition plan it can be a very effective way to help you lose weight and help improve your overall health and wellness. The reason why intermittent fasting is popular is that it helps  control 2 very important chemicals or hormones when it comes to losing weight. And those hormones are growth hormone and insulin. Now usually when everyone thinks of growth hormone they think about athletes and possibly steroids. But your body produces its own growth hormone. It’s one of the major hormones in the body when it comes to losing weight and developing nice lean muscle. Most people associate growth hormone with being the anti-aging hormone. So growth hormone is important across it helps you build muscle and helps burn body.

The other hormone affected by intermittent fasting is insulin. Now everyone has heard about insulin and usually only think of insulin we think of diabetes. And this is true diabetics usually do have problems with insulin and insulin resistance. But insulin also controls how much fat we store on our body. If insulin is in your body, floating around in your bloodstream is impossible for your body to burn fat. Insulin basically tells your body to store fat. So with the insulin levels are high in your body it does not matter what you are eating, the calories from the food are going to be stored as body fat. Even if you are eating a delicious grilled chicken with some steamed vegetables when the insulin levels are high all of those calories are going to be stored as body fat.

Insulin actually works against growth hormone and will prevent your body from burning fat and building lean healthy muscle. So now you know that if you see someone with a very large stomach they probably have a problem with insulin.

It’s a complicated process in the body.  Insulin is produced by the pancreas. When everything is normal the cells in your body are receptive to the insulin that is being produced by the pancreas and everything is fine. But when people start over eating problems start to show their ugly head. Because a person is constantly eating, especially your sugar and carbohydrate foods and beverages your body, your pancreas produces more insulin to help control this. The issue is that the body is producing so much insulin the cells become resistant to it.  And because the cells are resistant to insulin the pancreas produces more and more insulin.

When the pancreas is producing more insulin than the body needs the cells of the body actually become resistant to the insulin.  And what happens is there is a low amount of insulin in the cells of the body but there is a tremendously high amount of insulin floating around in the bloodstream. This high amount of insulin in your body causes everything that you are eating to be stored as body fat. This is one of the main precursors to diabetes or being what they call prediabetic. And if you do not get this under control you are on your way to having full-blown diabetes.

Intermittent fasting can help with this because it decreases the number of times that you are eating during the day. Every time you eat something your body usually converts part of that food into sugar or glucose; and this in turn elevates insulin levels. So the theory is that if you decrease the number of times you are going to eat during the day you decrease the number of insulin spikes throughout your day.

Intermittent fasting can be practiced several different ways. Usually if someone is beginning with intermittent fasting we usually suggest that they start with 3 meals a day. Usually that would mean that you are eating breakfast, lunch and dinner. You are eating three times a day with no snacking in between. In my opinion this is probably one of the best ways to start with intermittent fasting.  For most of us this sounds familiar because we have been eating breakfast, lunch and dinner and probably enjoying one or two snacks in between. If you need a snack in between these three meals I would suggest that you eat vegetables.

If you are successful with just eating your three meals a day and you are losing weight and feel really good most people would continue and keep this regimen.

If you want to step up a notch with intermittent fasting then you would limit your eating to just 8 hours during the day. And if you are eating during only 8 hours of the day you would be fasting approximately 16 hours of the day. For example if you’re going to have your first meal at 11 AM you should be finished eating by 7 PM.  You can still enjoy your normal breakfast, lunch and dinner with this schedule.

Most people have great success with this routine of only eating during 8 hours of the day and they find that it is an easy lifestyle to adjust to.

Some people might decide to take intermittent fasting a step further and they go to a time schedule of just eating during 4 hours of the day. This is something that I do not think is necessary for most people and would not recommend it for most people. It takes a tremendous amount of discipline to maintain this program. Again this schedule of only eating during  a 4 hours during the day is something that I do not recommend for most people. And if you were considering doing this type of routine you definitely have to speak with your medical doctor and get clearance to do it.

I just want to touch the topic of exercise and weight loss. There are a multitude of exercises and exercise routines that a person can do to lose weight, build muscle, increase endurance and improve your cardiovascular health. Each type of exercise will give a certain result.

For example if someone would practice an exercise routine of consistently  lifting heavy weights they would develop big thick muscles. Conversely, if your focus is on aerobic exercise, for example walking this would help you burn calories, burn body fat and improve your cardiovascular health.

We also have to take into consideration other things such as: age, sex and level of physical fitness. We have many couples coming to us together for assistance in losing weight and so many times we hear the same story.

That the female is doing the same type of weight lifting routine as the male and also following the same type of diet and drinking a lots of protein drinks with big scoops of peanut butter. The man is losing weight but the woman is just getting heavier and more bulky. One of the main reasons that the man is losing weight while the woman is getting heavier is that men have testosterone.

This is the reason why men always seem to lose weight more quickly than ladies. So if you are a woman and reading this article and you are doing the same type of exercises and following the same type of diet as your male significant other, you are probably not losing as much weight as he is and now you know the reason why. Woman have to workout smarter not necessarily harder.

In our medical weight loss program people come to us to help them lose weight for so many different reasons. And for some losing weight can be a triumphant personal victory and such is the case with Susan. You see Susan was a happily married 57-year-old  woman with 3 children.  But as it turns out Susan’s husband was not quite as happy as she was and he left her for a much younger woman.

Financially Susan was left secure by her husband because he was a very successful businessman but emotionally she was totally devastated.  It took quite a bit of time for Susan’s friends to finally convince her to start dating, to get her life back.

And being good friends they set her up on lots of blind dates but sadly there was never a 2nd date. Finally Susan had enough and she decided it was time to do something about her situation.

She decided to find love again.

Here are a few of Susan’s favorite recipes from our weight loss program.

Double Chocolate Low Carb Mug Cake

  • 1 ½ TBSP Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
  • 2 TBSP Cream Cheese
  • 3 TBSP Unsweetened Almond Milk
  • ½ Tbsp Milk Chocolate Cocoa
  • ½ Tbsp Dark Chocolate Cocoa
  • 2 TBSP Milled Flax Seed
  • 1 TBSP Almond Flour
  • 1 TBSP Sour Cream
  • 1 Egg
  • 2 TBSP Chocolate Sugar Free Flavoring (Torani)
  • 2 or more packets STEVIA
  • Soften the cream cheese in the microwave then add the other ingredients and microwave for 1 ½ minutes to 5 minutes depending on your microwave power.

Peanut Butter Low Carb Mug Cake

  • 1 ½ TBSP Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
  • 2 TBSP Cream Cheese
  • 1 TBSP Unsweetened Peanut Butter
  • 3 TBSP Unsweetened Almond Milk
  • 2 TBSP Golden Flax Seed
  • 1 TBSP Almond Flour
  • 1 Egg
  • 2 TBSP Hazelnut Sugar Free Flavoring
  • 3 packets STEVIA
  • First soften the cream cheese in the microwave then add all the ingredients and microwave for 1 ½ minutes to 5 minutes depending on your microwave.

Chocolate  Mousse

  • 1 can of full fat coconut milk, water drained
  • ¼ cup of sugar free chocolate protein powder
  • 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder unsweetened.
  • Start with one can of full fat coconut cream or full fat coconut milk and just drain the water. And put this in a mixing bowl then add 1/4 cup of your sugar free protein powder and add your 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder then you just mix everything together. Make sure that your protein powder is sugar-free. We have a great sugar free protein powder in the office.

Mug Cake Low Carb

  • 1 egg,
  • 1 tablespoon of coconut flour
  • 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons of almond flour
  • 1 teaspoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • Add vanilla flavored Stevia to taste combine all of the ingredients in a microwave safe bowl and microwave for approximately one or three minutes until it’s cooked.

In this article I’m going to give you the recipes for some amazing weight loss smoothies that will get rid of your appetite and make you feel totally satisfied , I will also give you recipes for low-carb – low sugar brownies, cakes and cheesecake. I am even going to add to recipes for piecrust that are both low in carbohydrates and low in sugar.

Chocolate Smoothie For Breakfast or Lunch*
2 tablespoons of Chia seeds
1/4 cup of heavy whipping cream
1/4 cup of our Solutions4 chocolate protein powder
1 tablespoon of coconut oil
1 tablespoon of unsweetened cacao powder
1 – 2 packets of Stevia
1/4 cup of water
1/2 cup of ice
combine all of the ingredients into a blender and enjoy

Heavenly Chocolate Weight Loss Smoothie*
1/2 medium avocado
1 cup of unsweetened almond milk or any other unsweetened nondairy milk
1/4 cup of heavy cream
2 tablespoons of Chia seeds
1 tablespoon of cocoa powder
one scoop of solutions for chocolate protein powder or a quarter cup of egg white protein powder (optional ingredients include drops of liquid Stevia to taste.)
Directions:
Place all of these ingredients into a blender and pulse until nice and smooth. If you are feeling very chocolatey you can use a square of dark chocolate that’s at least 85% dark chocolate and break this into tiny pieces and mixed it in your smoothie.

Chocolate Muffins*
1 large egg
1 tablespoon of coconut oil or butter
1 tablespoon of xylitol
5 – 10 drops of liquid Stevia
1 tablespoon of raw cacao powder
2 tablespoons of almond flour
1 tablespoon of coconut flour
1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon of cream of tartar
1/8 teaspoon of baking soda
(optional one square of 85% – 90% of dark chocolate)
Instructions:
Crack the eggs into a bowl and beat using a hand whisk. Then add the melted coconut oil or butter, xylitol, Stevia, cacao powder, coconut flour and almond flour, cinnamon, cream of tartar and baking soda. Mix everything well and pour the mixture into small ramekins. (break the square of dark chocolate into very tiny pieces and gently place them on top of the chocolate batter) then microwave for 60 – 90 seconds and you have a delicious low-carb chocolate muffin. Instead of using a microwave you can also bake them in an oven that is preheated 360°F for about 15 minutes. You can even top the muffin with full fat sour cream or whipped heavy cream. This recipe should make one muffin.

Now, first I am going to give you two awesome recipes for piecrust that are both low-carb and low sugar and then I will give you recipes for a yummy cheesecake, brownies and even a wonderful chocolate cake.

Almond Piecrust**
1 1/2 cups of almonds
1/4 cup of vanilla whey protein powder
1/4 cup of melted butter
Directions:
Preheat your oven to 350°F. Using a food processor with the S-blade in place, grind almonds to a consistency similar to cornmeal. Add the protein powder and butter and pulse to combine everything. Then pour this into a pie plate and press firmly and evenly into place gently building it up around the sides. Bake this for approximately 12 – 15 minutes or until the edges are starting to brown lightly. Then remove from oven and let it cool.

Crisp Chocolate Piecrust**
1 1/2 cups of almonds
1/4 cup of Stevia
2 squares of bitter chocolate melted
3 tablespoons of butter melted
2 tablespoons of vanilla or chocolate whey protein powder
Directions:
Preheat your oven to 325°F. Using the S-blade of your food processor grind almonds until they are the texture of cornmeal. Add in the Splenda and pulse to combine everything. Pour in the melted chocolate and then the melted butter and run the processor until everything is evenly distributed. Make sure that everything is combined nicely together. Then at the protein powder and pulse again to mix everything together. We are then going to pour this mixture into a 10 inch pie plate that you have coated with nonstick cooking spray press firmly and evenly into place and bake for approximately 8 minute. Allow this to cool before filling.

Chocolate Cheesecake**
2 cups of cottage cheese
2 eggs
1/2 cup of sour cream
2 ounces of unsweetened baking chocolate melted
1/4 cup of Stevia
1 almond piecrust – recipe noted above
Directions:
Preheat your oven to 370°F. Put the cottage cheese, eggs and sour cream in a blender and blend. You want to blend everything until it is nice and smooth. Then add the melted chocolate and Splenda and blend everything again. The next step is the poor this mixture into the pre-baked pie crust. Place the cake on the top rack of the oven and place of flat pan of water on the bottom rack. Bake for approximately 40 – 45 minutes. Then let it cool and place it in your refrigerator to chill it well before
eating it. You can also serve this with heavy whipped cream.

Coffee Mocha Chocolate Chip Brownies**
1 cup of Stevia or xylitol
1/2 cup of chocolate whey protein powder
1/4 cup of almond meal
1/2 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tablespoon of instant coffee crystals
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1/2 cup of butter
2 large eggs
1/4 cup of water
6 ounces of sugar-free chocolate chips or sugar-free dark chocolate bars chopped chocolate chip size – you can do this by hand or use a food processor.
Directions:
Preheat your oven to 350°F. Put the Splenda, protein powder, almond meal, cocoa, instant coffee crystals and salt in a food processor with the S-blade in place. Pulse to combine everything. Then add the butter and pulse until the butter is mixed in nicely with the dry ingredients. Pour everything into a bowl then mix in the eggs one at a time beating well with the whisk after each egg is added. Then beat in the water and finally stir in the chocolate chips or chopped up chocolate bars.
Next spray and 8 x 8 inch pan with nonstick cooking spray and spread the batter evenly in the pan. Bake this for approximately 15 – 20 minutes but be sure not to over bake. Let it cool and then cut into squares. You can cut this into 25 small Brownies.

Chocolate Cake**
1 cup of finely ground hazelnuts or almonds
1/2 cup of vanilla or chocolate whey protein powder
3 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon of baking soda
1 cup of Stevia
1/2 teaspoon of salt
5 tablespoons of coconut oil
1 tablespoon of cider vinegar
1 cup of cold water
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350°F. In a bowl combine your nuts, protein powder, cocoa, baking soda, Stevia and salt and stir them well together. You want to make sure that there were no lumps in this mixture. Then spray a 9 x 9 inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray and place the mixture in it. Make two holes in this mixture for the coconut oil into one in the vinegar into the other in the water over top of the whole thing. Mix with the spoon or fork until everything is well combined and bake this for approximately 30 minutes. This cake is moist, delicious and fudgy it’s more like Brownies as compared to your regular layer cake.
