It’s Super Bowl Sunday and in celebration of our Philadelphia Eagles I am giving you a super green smoothie recipe that is loaded with healthy nutrients, good healthy fats and of course it’s the color green.

This Super Bowl Sunday is special to me for 2 reasons; one is that our Eagles are in it and even more important is that I married my wife 30 years ago on Super Bowl Sunday. Hopefully the Eagles can give us a Super Bowl victory as a 30th Wedding Anniversary gift.

This recipe will give you a very large smoothie that you can put in a travel mug and drink it all day for continuous energy. Or you can divide it between 2 servings. This recipe is low carb and has lots of good healthy fat. I like to make this early in the morning and take it with me to the office. I keep it in the refrigerator and drink it in between patients.

Here is the recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 2 Avocado
  • 2 handful of sprouts
  • 2 handfuls of greens
  • 2 tbsp organic cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 can of coconut milk
  • 6 ice cubes
  • Optional stevia to taste

Combine all of the ingredients into a blender, blend and enjoy. The Smoothie will have a very thick and creamy consistency.

The avocados and full fat coconut milk have lots of good healthy fat that should help you eliminate your appetite. In another article on this blog that I posted some time ago I wrote that there is a section in the colon that is called the brake and that when good healthy fats pass over this section the body releases hormones that should help control your appetite for as much as 3 hours. If you are weight training and lifting heavy weights that will usually develop thick dense musculature and possibly cause a gain in body weight. And let’s not forget that since heavy weight training is breaking down muscle you will need to increase your calories and amounts of protein that you are eating to build the muscles backup. This of course is going to make you more hungry. For females it’s even more important to do the right type of exercise routines.

You can see that there are many things that need to be taken into consideration when designing an exercise program for a person. Many people are trying to burn body fat, lose pounds and inches and build muscle at the same time. Sadly, as we get older this is almost impossible to do.

That is why in our Philadelphia weight loss clinic we like to focus on first burning body fat, losing pounds and inches.

We have different phases; phase 1 is for burning body fat and losing weight. Phase 2 is for toning the body. In phase 1 we focused on losing pounds and inches by performing mostly low intensity exercises such as walking outside, on a treadmill or in your local mall at a somewhat brisk pace. You may also write a bike, either outside or a stationary bike in the comfort of your own home while watching television or at your gym. You can also follow along with a cardio class, and low intensity Zumba class or even a dance class. Just as long as you are moving your body at a brisk pace you are fine. With low intensity exercise usually during the first 30 minutes you are building up good heart health cardiovascular health and burning up the sugar that is in your bloodstream from all the food that you have been eating. Finally, at minute 31 you should start burning your own body fat.

That is why we usually suggest that people have a goal of increasing the amount of time that they are performing low intensity cardio to 60 minutes. When people start out with us they may only be able to walk for 10 – 15 minutes and that’s it they are finished. That is perfectly fine. You have to accept yourself as you are and be happy with what you are able to accomplish in regards to exercise. If you can only do 10 – 15 minutes of cardio vascular exercise today, except that, be happy and in two weeks try to increase the time that you are walking to 20 minutes. And just repeat this gradual increase over time.

You are trying to make yourself healthy by losing weight so accept the fact that this is going to be a journey and then it’s going to take time and it requires persistence, dedication and repetition. Be honest with yourself and set realistic goals. For some reason many people set these outrageous goals and then when they don’t achieve them they become discouraged and they stop eating well and exercising.

Let’s be kind to ourselves and let set small goals and over the course of time these tiny baby steps become giant steps. And of course the more days of the week that you perform some type of cardiovascular exercise the more conducive it is to achieving your weight loss goals. It is usually recommended that people perform some type of cardiovascular exercise at least 3 – 4 times a week.

In review in order to focus on losing weight, losing pounds and inches it is usually recommended that you perform some type of low intensity cardiovascular physical activity. The beginning phase of the exercise is usually low intensity cardio to focus on losing pounds and inches and then when we get close to our weight loss goal we usually can start some type of exercise to tone the body. Trying to burn fat and build muscle at the same time becomes more difficult as we get older. This is simply because our hormone levels decrease as we get older.

So, in today’s article I’m going to give you a meal plan that should help you achieve your weight loss goals when used with our weight loss program.

For most weight loss patients, it is usually recommended that you eat three meals a day and two good healthy snacks. For snacks we like vegetables, especially celery, cucumbers and carrots. However, you may also eat a low glycemic fruit as a snack.

For breakfast it is recommended to eat 2 ounces of protein, 1 portion of good healthy fat, and 1 portion of a good carbohydrate or 1 portion of a low glycemic fruit.

Then we have a snack in between breakfast and lunch.

For lunch it is recommended to eat 4 – 6 ounces of protein, 1 – 2 portions of a good healthy fat and 4 ounces of vegetables.

And then we have another snack in between lunch and dinner.

For dinner it is usually recommended to eat 4 – 6 ounces of protein, 1 portion of a good healthy fat, 1 portion of a starchy carbohydrate and 4 ounces of vegetables.

I just want to make a note that even though I have 4 ounces of vegetables at both lunch and dinner you may eat more than 4 ounces of vegetables at both lunch and dinner. Vegetables are an excellent source of healthy nutrition and usually I try to eat at least 4 – 5 cups of vegetables a day. Especially leafy green vegetables. It’s no surprise that people that eat lots of vegetables enjoy excellent overall health and wellness.

For general calorie recommendations it is not recommended that females eat less than 1000 calories per day. For men, usually it is not recommended that men eat less than 1600 calories per day.

Your age, height, weight, lifestyle activity level and exercise routines usually help determine the number of calories you should be eating for the day.

Waffles:

  • Ingredients:
  • Protein powder – vanilla or chocolate – 1-2 tbsps
  • Stevia sweetener – 2 tbsps
  • Vanilla or chocolate extract – 2 tbsps
  • Eggs – 4
  • Baking powder – ½ tsp
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder – 2 tbsps
  • Coconut oil – 2 tbsps
  • Sea salt – just a pinch

Combine all of your ingredients except for the coconut oil and vanilla extract in a blender and blend until everything is mixed nicely together, it should make a very smooth batter. Then add your vanilla or chocolate extract and coconut oil and continue to blend until it’s all mixed nicely together. After that spoon out 3 tablespoons of your batter onto a hot waffle iron and close the lid.  Cook until it’s done. Remove the waffle and then cook the rest of the batter.  You can serve this with some yummy sugar free chocolate sauce or any other sugar free sauce if you like. This recipe makes 2 waffles.

Quick and Easy Cheese Cake Recipe by Medical Weight Loss in Philadelphia

I hope everyone is enjoying this Holiday season. Today I am giving you a delicious recipe that I have been sharing in the office with our weight loss patients. It’s a quick and easy cheese cake recipe that takes lees than 10 minutes to make. It’s low carb and ketosis friendly.

 

 

My Favorite Quick and Easy Low Carb Cheesecake

  • Full fat cream cheese – 1 cup 
  • Heavy whipping cream – 1 cup
  • cinnamon – 1/2 teaspoon
  • vanilla extract – 1 tablespoon
  • swerve – 1/4 cup 
  • Optional ingredients: 12 blueberries or 3 tablespoons of chopped dark chocolate at least 85% .

Directions: Place all of your ingredients except for the chocolate and blueberries in a bowl and mix everything until the mixture is combined nicely. Then, just spoon out your cheesecake batter into glasses. Next place 3 blueberries over top of the batter or break up your chocolate and sprinkle it over top and then you can store it in the refrigerator by just covering each glass with plastic wrap. This delicious treat should last up to four days in the refrigerator. This recipe makes about four servings each of them has approximately 5 g of carbohydrates and about 6 g of protein. If you add the blueberries you are adding additional fructose.

So there you have it. A quick and easy recipe for a scrumptious treat.

And yes that does include time with family and friends shopping for those great holiday deals. In today’s article I am giving you a great recipe for a low carb keto bread. My wife made it last week for Thanksgiving dinner and everyone loved it. It was so good they could not believe that it was Keto and Paleo friendly.

Low Carb Bread

  • coconut flour – ½ cup
  • sea salt – ¼ teaspoon
  • baking soda – ¼ teaspoon
  • Eggs – 6 large
  • melted coconut oil – ½ cup

First preheat your oven to 350°F. Now let’s sift the coconut flour, baking soda and sea salt into a large bowl. Then add the melted coconut oil and eggs while stirring everything together. Mix until it’s smooth. Next take a bread pan, a small one, grease the pan, then fill it with the batter you just made. Only fill approximately  ⅔ of the pan with the batter. Let this bake for about 45 – 55 minutes. The baking time may vary depending on the intensity of your oven.
