Medical Weight Loss in Philadelphia

medical weight loss philadelphia, medical weight loss doctors philadelphia, weight loss centrs and clinics philadelphia

At our medical weight loss center in Philadelphia, Dr. Mermelstein and his staff of nurse practitioners and physician assistants help people achieve their weight loss goals. Dr. Mermelstein may use FDA approved weight loss medications, various vitamin injection therapies such as vitamin B 12 and other lipotropic injections also known as the Lipo-Shot. When combined with a proper nutrition plan and some type of physical activity most patients do extremely well and achieve their weight loss goals. In our program Dr. Kenny also spends time educating people on the proper type of diet that he believes to be best for them.

Some of the medications that Dr. Mermelstein may prescribe for a weight-loss patient are:

  • Phentermine – Adipex,
  • Phendimetrazine – Bontril
  • Belviq
  • Plenity
  • Saxenda
  • Qsymia

Each of these medications work in their own way to help facilitate the weight loss process for people. Phentermine, for example, is one of the oldest weight-loss medications to be prescribed by physicians for patients.

Phentermine helps by giving people a feeling of satiety or being full and not hungry. Phentermine also helps stimulate the body processes that break down fat.

When our patients combine taking phentermine with the diet plan that we give them most people are very successful and lose weight.

If a person also adds some type of physical activity even if it is just walking during the day it provides an extra boost to their losing weight. Even our patients that are not able to exercise much at all because of back injuries, leg injuries or some other type of health issue usually do well as long as they follow the diet plan we give them.

When you come to your office you will fill out a questionnaire telling us about your medical history, any health issues that you may have such as hypothyroidism, PCOS, diabetes and high blood pressure. We also ask that you tell us the medications that you are presently taking. After that you will see the doctor – medical provider and they will review your medical history and medications then perform an evaluation that includes measuring your height and weight, calculating your BMI, taking your blood pressure, pulse and physical assessment.

The doctor will also discuss your goals and after all of that will make the recommendations for the plan that he believes will be best for you. This may include the weight loss appetite suppressant medications. Then you will sit with Dr. Kenny and discuss diet/nutrition and physical activity recommendations. Dr. Kenny has lost 80 lbs on this plan and he has kept it off.

Usually patients are seen once a month unless they need to be seen more frequently because of other health issues they may have.

People are with us for as long as they need to be. Some patients may come to see us for a month or two while others may be with us longer because of the amount of weight that they need to lose. As long as a person needs us, we are here for them.

4 Reasons for Stomach Bloating and Belly Fat by Medical Weight Loss in Philadelphia

medical weight loss philadelphia, medical weight loss doctors philadelphia, weight loss centrs and clinics philadelphia

In or Philadelphia Medical Weight Loss Center people come to us for all different reasons. Most people who come to us need help with losing weight while others may want to lose weight but they also want to improve their overall health and wellness. One of the main complaints that we usually hear from almost everyone is that their stomach is always bloated and / or they just cannot get rid of their belly fat. There are many different reasons why a person may be bloated or not able to get rid of their belly fat and today I am going to discuss a few of them.

Reason Number 1:

One of the most common reasons for having difficult to lose belly fat is that there is too much insulin in the body. When your insulin level is high your body is in fat storage mode. Most of the calories that you are eating during this time or going to be stored as body fat. You start developing abdominal fat also known as visceral fat. This can also lead to your  liver getting fatty and can eventually cause fat to develop around other organs and into our stomachs and causing distended belly. This can also cause a sagging stomach as well. And of course let’s not forget the love handles and back fat. Eating too much high-sugar fruits, starchy carbohydrates, candies and beverages containing sugar can all increase your insulin level and cause you to gain fat.

Reason Number 2:

High cortisol levels can also increase your belly fat. cortisol is produced by your adrenal glands and is considered to be a stress hormone. When you are physically and mentally over stressed your body produces more cortisol and cortisol in turn increase insulin production. And we know that high levels of insulin increases stomach fat. Cortisol turns protein into glucose which causes a spike in insulin production. Because cortisol increases your blood sugar and your insulin you eventually develop a insulin resistance and your body cannot properly control blood sugar; now you can possibly develop Diabetes. So your body is now producing high levels of insulin but it’s not effective in lower blood sugar levels.

Reason Number 3:

Another reason for stomach bloating is that you are consuming too many sugar alcohols such as erythritol. Sugar alcohol can cause stomach bloating, gas, diarrhea and constipation. Personally, I cannot consume large amounts of erythritol. When I was first diagnosed with diabetes I was trying to restrict my sugars and starchy carbohydrates. For my birthday, my wonderful wife made me a sugar-free, low carb cheesecake and she used erythritol. When I took my first bite it was absolutely delicious and suffice to say it was my birthday so I indulged a bit too much and I paid the price later.

My stomach was a mess, nothing but pain and gas. I learned this lesson the hard way. If you are maintaining a restricted carbohydrate diet, you have to be careful of overconsumption sugar alcohols. There are other sugar substitutes that you can use. I now use monk fruit and monk fruit extract. If you do use sugar alcohols please use small quantities.

Reason Number 4:

Finally you may just be overeating or eating too many times during the day. When you eat it takes about 4 – 5  hours for the food that you are eating to be processed and go through your stomach. It takes about 5-6 hours for the food to go through your small intestine and then it can take anywhere from 10 hours to 30 hours to go through your large intestine depending on what you ate.

So when you are eating something every hour you could be overloading your system. You have to give your body time to digest all of the food that you were eating. And when you are eating take your time you don’t want to shovel everything and anything into your body as fast as you can. Be mindful of the foods you are eating and the quantity of food that you are eating.

Top 5 Diet Hacks For Fast Weight Loss

Today we are going to discuss five simple hacks for all of us with busy and hectic lifestyles that are short on time.

The first simple hack is to practice some type of intermittent fasting. My version of intermittent fasting is very safe and effective. It has been very successful helping our patients lose weight.

Personally, I like the 16:8 schedule for intermittent fasting. This means that you are going to choose an 8-hour time period during the day; and that is when you are going to eat the majority of your meals. During this 8-hour time period you are going to eat all of your food groups, your proteins, vegetables, healthy fats, healthy carbohydrates and fruit.  Now, if you get hungry outside of this 8-hour window you are allowed to eat healthy proteins, vegetables and your healthy fats.

The great thing about this protocol is that you get to choose when you are going to eat. Many people like to start eating at 11 a.m. and finish at 7 p.m.. While I have other patients that work a night shift and choose their 8 hour time period at times that are convenient for them.

Diet hack number 2 is to keep your menu simple. Most of my  meals are very simple and easy. I make sure that I have a good healthy protein like fish or chicken and I enjoy large amounts of healthy vegetables. If you are one of our patients you know that most nights for dinner my wife and I enjoy large amounts of roasted vegetables.

We will chop up a head of cauliflower, broccoli, red yellow and green peppers then spread them over two large baking sheets and season them with black pepper, garlic and oregano.

For lunch, I usually have another small portion of protein with lots of vegetables. Even if you are out, lunch is easy because you can order a something like a grilled chicken Caesar salad and just have them put the dressing on the side.

For breakfast, I either have a smoothie or two eggs with a small avocado. Please make sure that you are using herbs and spices because you want your food to be enjoyable. Just because we are trying to be healthy and keep a good healthy weight doesn’t mean that we have to be eating food that tastes like cardboard. There are times when I do try to make my meals a bit more elaborate but this is usually short-lived because it just takes too much time and effort.

Diet hack number three is to plan out your meals in advance. If you make your  menu a week in advance it makes life so much easier. It also does quite a bit to ensure your success. If you make your menu in advance for each day you know exactly what you are going to be eating and at what time of the day. This keeps you from doing what I call free-styling. And free-styling is just winging it and eating whenever you get hungry and grabbing foods that are quick and easy.

Diet hack number four is to be a creature of habit. Personally, I can eat the same thing everyday. I have changed my way of thinking about food. To me, food is fuel, food is energy. Because of this, I am able to eat lots of the same foods everyday.  My wife on the other hand, needs more variety. But even she, has her go to foods.

Diet hack number 5 is to make sure that you have some quick and easy go to meals if you don’t have time to sit down and eat a meal. For me this means having a smoothie that’s quick and easy to make or having one of our protein shakes for a meal. For the best of both worlds to make sure  that I am getting the proper nutrition and fuel to help my body function at peak capacity I will usually make a smoothie with our protein powder. I love this because it only takes about 3 minutes and I have everything I need help control my appetite for several hours and it gives me the fuel and energy to function all day long.

I hope you find these 5 diet hacks helpful and share them with your family and friends. Keto Diet and Intermitent Fasting Part 1

If this is your first time visiting our website and you would like information on our medical weight loss program just call us at 215-821-7336 and Lisa will schedule your free weight loss consultation. This article is part 1 about the basics of following a keto diet and combining it with Intermittent fasting. This article is not intended to be used as medical advice and before starting any type of nutrition plan you should discuss it with your Physician. If you have any health issues such as diabetes do not attempt these diet plans without being supervised by a medical provider.

Many people are looking to follow a ketogenic diet and they’re looking to combined it with intermittent fasting. What I have found to be the easiest way to begin intermittent fasting is trying not to eat breakfast. A general rule of thumb can be that you simply eat only when you are hungry.

So if you are not hungry first thing in the morning you do not have to force yourself to eat.  Many new people come into our office thinking that they are following an intermittent fasting program that they designed themselves and they are not losing weight on their own. For most of these people the reason why they are not losing weight is that they are eating when they are not hungry.

They are still following the model that has everyone eating 6 times a day. You see, when you have a good healthy dinner and then you go to bed your body is fasting while you are asleep.  when you wake up in the morning your body should normally be in fat burning mode. That’s right, your body it’s starting to burn its own fat.

Then when you have that big breakfast that causes your insulin levels to rise and this causes your sugar levels to decrease which will will make you hungry a few hours later. When you wake up in the morning, if you are hungry or not really depends upon what you ate the night before.

If you are eating the right types of food for dinner, you really should not wake up hungry the next morning. If you are eating the right foods and following an intermittent fasting eating protocol you should wake up in the morning not being hungry.

When I personally first started intermittent fasting I didn’t really get hungry until 11 a.m. . So for me my first meal of the day was at 11 a.m. followed by lunch and dinner.  As time went on and my body adjusted to this way of eating I pushed my first meal of the day back to 12:00 noon, then 1pm and now I have my first meal of the day at 2 pm .

If for some reason I wake up very hungry in the morning I have a breakfast consisting of good healthy protein, good healthy fats and vegetables. If I do not have time to prepare a proper breakfast I will make a protein drink with our protein powder mixed with a cup of water, a teaspoon of MCT oil and 2-3 handfuls of a leafy green vegetable.

People who are practicing intermittent fasting for some time and our now  an advanced level of intermittent fasting have a goal of eating 2 meals a day and some eventually go to one meal a day. Many of our Intermittent fasting people eat 2 to 3 meals a day with the allowed snacks but most people follow our Pseudo-Intermittent fasting diet. With this program people eat all of the food groups for an 8 hour period and outside of those 8 hours you can eat your protein, vegetables and healthy fats but try to avoid your starchy carbohydrates like bread, pizza, pasta, rice, etc… and fruit.

I hope you have enjoyed this article.  Next week I will be posting part 2. In part 2, I will review some of the better food choices for a ketogenic diet.

If you are looking to lose weight or improve your overall health and wellness I invite you to call and schedule your free weight loss consultation. Just call us at 215-821-7336 and Lisa will gladly schedule your free weight loss consultation.
